Greer Relief was founded in the heart of the Great Depression, a time when our community came together to make sure no one went hungry or faced the cold alone. That spirit of compassion and solidarity has guided us ever since. While the world has changed, our commitment to fighting hunger and homelessness has stayed the same—we’ve just adapted how we do it to meet today’s challenges.
We believe a healthy community starts with the well-being of its people. Just like in the 1930s, the reasons people need help today are often complicated. For some, it’s the result of generational poverty or addiction. For others, it might be a sudden crisis—like losing a job or facing a medical emergency. No matter the cause, every family going through a tough time deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and real support.
Our long-term goal isn’t just to offer quick fixes. We work with our neighbors to understand the root of the problem and find sustainable solutions—so they can move forward with stability and hope.
Here are some of their stories.
Maya, a hardworking single mother, has always done everything she can to provide for her son, Jordan. But when Jordan fell ill, the mounting medical expenses, a sudden rent increase, and everyday bills became overwhelming. Despite her steady paycheck, it simply wasn’t enough, and she soon fell behind on her utility bill—facing the terrifying reality of disconnection.
With nowhere else to turn, Maya reached out to Greer Relief. Understanding the urgency of her situation, they stepped in with $299.36 toward her utility bill, ensuring her home remained warm and lit. This support gave her the breathing room she desperately needed—to focus on Jordan’s recovery without the immediate fear of losing essential services.
Thanks to Greer Relief, Maya found more than financial assistance—she found hope. Knowing she wasn’t alone gave her the strength to move forward. With renewed determination, she’s now working toward financial stability, focused on building a secure future for herself and Jordan.
Her journey reflects Greer Relief’s mission—not just to provide temporary aid, but to empower individuals to achieve lasting self-sufficiency.
Sophia, a resilient forty-year-old, faced a crisis when a faulty thermostat caused her power bill to spike—and her landlord refused to fix it. At the same time, her income was cut in half, leaving her unable to cover essentials, including a $687.60 CPW electricity bill. With no family to turn to, she felt overwhelmed and uncertain.
Greer Relief stepped in with $300 toward her bill—timely support that kept her power on and gave her the breathing room to fix the thermostat and search for a second job.
This act of kindness marked a turning point. With her utilities stabilized and extra income coming in, Sophia began to rebuild. She credits Greer Relief with restoring her hope and giving her the strength to move forward—a testament to the vital role the organization plays in uplifting individuals and strengthening the community
After relocating to South Carolina from North Carolina, the Cruz-Williams family was starting to settle into their new community when Hurricane Helene disrupted everything. Marcus had been commuting to Asheville for work, but the storm’s impact left him temporarily unable to return to his job, putting a strain on the family’s finances.
With four children to care for, Elena and Marcus did everything they could to manage, but the loss of income left them behind on rent and worried about keeping their home.
Greer Relief stepped in to ease their burden, providing $1,500 to cover their rent and help the family stay in their home. This support gave them the stability they needed to focus on rebuilding their routine after the storm’s disruption.
The Cruz-Williams family’s story shows how Greer Relief’s assistance can make a meaningful difference for families facing unexpected crises, helping them hold onto their homes and build a stronger future after life’s storms.
