Homeless Period Project

A nonprofit organization

THE PERIOD PROJECT (formerly The Homeless Period Project) has made an admirable impact since 2015 by addressing the critical issue of period poverty. By distributing menstrual health supplies to those in need and raising awareness locally and nationally, the organization has promoted dignity and well-being for individuals who might otherwise face the challenges of inadequate menstrual support. The mission's focus on transforming shame and poverty into community and dignity is compelling, demonstrating a holistic approach to this often-overlooked aspect of poverty. Their work not only provides essential products but also fosters a broader societal shift towards empathy and inclusivity. Overall, The Period Project stands out as an empowering initiative that has tangibly improved lives, helping to remove the stigma surrounding menstruation and supporting individuals facing financial hardships.

 OUR WHY

Period poverty affects 500 million people globally, restricting access to menstrual products, education, and hygiene facilities. This limitation hinders individuals' ability to attend school or work, reinforcing social and economic inequalities. Initiatives like The Period Project are vital for promoting equality and improving quality of life by ensuring access to menstrual products and education, empowering individuals to engage fully in their communities.

 PERIODS ARE NOT A LUXURY

The Period Project has made significant progress in combating period poverty, providing over 412,039 period packs to more than 164,816 individuals through grants. Menstrual products are excluded from federal and state assistance programs like SNAP and WIC, making this work essential. Recently, the organization secured bipartisan support for HB.3563 in South Carolina, eliminating the sales tax on period supplies effective May 1, 2024. This law improves access and affordability, demonstrating the impact of advocacy on community health and dignity. The Period Project exemplifies how dedicated efforts can drive systemic change and promote equity for those facing period poverty.

 HOW YOU CAN HELP

There are numerous ways to support The Period Project’s mission to end period poverty:

  • Donate Funds or Supplies: Monetary donations or contributions of menstrual products directly support the distribution of essential supplies to those in need.
  • Host a Packing Party or Donation Drive: Organize events to assemble period packs or collect products, bringing your community together for a meaningful cause.
  • Volunteer for Deliveries or Outreach: Offer your time to deliver supplies or help with outreach, such as making phone calls to build awareness.
  • Create Donation Bags at Home: Put together donation bags with pads, tampons, and hygiene items, then deliver them to local distribution sites.
  • Advocate to Elected Officials: Reach out to local representatives via phone or email to urge support for legislative measures that improve access to menstrual products.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Assembling period packs provides essential menstrual products, offering comfort and dignity to those in need. Each pack helps ensure more people can manage their daily lives without the stress of inadequate menstrual support. We are also in need of volunteers to help deliver menstrual supplies throughout Upstate South Carolina.
