The mission of the Center for Developmental Services (CDS) is to make caring for children with developmental delays and disabilities easier and more effective by linking medical and support services in a single location. Our service model is unique to the nation in how we address disability needs through collaborative care. We cover nine counties in the Upstate of South Carolina. At CDS, families have access to high quality intervention services which can help prevent a diagnosis from becoming a disability or prevent a disability from becoming life-limiting in terms of education, employment, and quality of life.
CDS primarily serves children from birth to 21 years of age, while our disability case managers serve all ages. We currently serve over 8,500 children and individuals each year across all demographics, as the only criteria for service is to have an identified or suspected developmental delay or disability. Some children come to CDS for a one-time evaluation for things like a speech or motor skills delay or a learning difficulty, while others come several times a week for years to address life-long conditions like Down syndrome, autism, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and other rare genetic disorders. In one location, children receive developmental screenings, diagnosis, therapy (occupational, physical, speech), audiology (evaluation and treatment of hearing loss, custom fit hearing aids and assistive technology), psychology, prosthetics, orthotics, education, and family support along with a medically-fragile daycare.
As the children we serve graduate and age-out of school services, the young adults are enrolled in our case management program. This is a Medicaid-funded program that helps individuals at risk of losing their self-sufficiency due to a disability or diagnosis. Case managers work with clients to help them obtain job skills, day and residential services, housing, transportation, financial education, social activities, medical needs and equipment, home modifications, and legal hearings. Our case managers must also be available to respond to their life’s changing needs and urgent or crisis circumstances to safeguard our vulnerable clients.
